This was not posted on the blog since the shootout didn't happen in Journal Square. It is in fact in McGinley Square area of Jersey City, more than half a mile from Journal Square PATH Station.

This is a horrible incident which is close to our district. I hope the injured cops, especially the critical ones, recover fast.

JERSEY CITY — Four Jersey City police officers were shot this morning, police spokesman Lt. Edgar Martinez confirmed.

News 12 is reporting that there was a standoff between police and two suspects police were searching for after a cop was shot earlier this morning.

WPIX reported that two people — a man and a woman wearing black hooded robes shot a police officer at about 5 a.m. That set off an intense manhunt in the area of Bergen Avenue and Reed Street, News 12 reported.

News 12 is also reporting that the two suspects were shot dead. The apartment building on Reed Street where the two were holed up is a known to police for drug activity.

Lt. Martinez would only confirm that four cops were shot. They were taken to the Jersey City Medical Center, a report said.
