BIZ Mini-Review: Microtech Computers – Ripoff?

microtech_computers_ripoff

I know three (3) computer stores here in Journal Square, and Microtech Computers on JFK Boulevard is one of them. However, among the three, it seems to me that only Microtech has a reputation of being a ripoff.

More if you read the rest….

Last month, a friend of mine was there and called me to ask if a video card costs $90. A video card is an interface you plug to the computer’s board. It has a port at the other end where you plug the monitor. Its main function is to make screen viewing better. And I know for a fact that an ordinary video card (not the expensive ones used in video gaming) doesn’t cost nearly $100. So I told him not to buy it, and I’m going with him to other stores (PC Computers on Bergen Avenue and US LiveNet on the boulevard).

While on the way shopping, my friend told me that there were many people at Microtech, but most of them either had complaints or had items for return. That’s not good, and it really made him doubt.

We ended up buying from US LiveNet, as the salesman from newest computer store in Journal Square – PC Computers – did not even know what a video card is. US LiveNet made a business with us in just a few minutes. The guy knew what he was talking about and the card was cheap: $23. My friend was happy.

Then, just a few days ago, I asked another friend who used to work in one of the local businesses on the boulevard: what does he think of Microtech? Without a blink of an eye, he answered “RIPOFF”, then he proceeded by telling more horror stories he has heard of from Microtech.

So, why do people keep buying there? Well, maybe because they didn’t know the reputation yet.

So if by any chance you landed on this page via search engine, STAY AWAY from Microtech. If you don’t want to go to Staples (Route 440 or Downtown Jersey City) or Best Buy (Secaucus) for some computer stuff, then try local businesses in the area. Give Radioshack (on Bergen Avenue) a shot, but I won’t guarantee low prices there.

  • I agree, Microtech is a bad store.

I bought a router there about two years ago and I couldn’t get it to work right.

They let me return it but charged me 15% and, on top of that, were very obnoxious.

I knew this place is bad the moment I walked in. Everything is overpriced and old. Wondering why this place is still in business for all this time.
