I just witnessed a failed mugging at Tuers Avenue and Academy Street. An old man was shoved to the ground by two teenagers who asked money from him. Nothing was taken from him since he had no money. When the old man started shouting, another man (let’s call him Joe) and I came to assist, as the culprits walked away normally as if nothing happened. Joe called them out but they ran away towards Summit Avenue.
I tried to convince the old man to report the incident but he didn’t want to. He didn’t want to go through the hassle of the “interview” process. So he went inside his house, and with his permission, I called the police. I told them what happened but unfortunately, they will not act if the caller is not the victim. They will not even file it in their database. “There’s nothing you can do about it.” was their exact words to me.
So please, if the same incident happened to you, call the Jersey City Police Department. JCPD has to have records of crime so they can do necessary actions (ie. more police visibility, patrolling cars, etc). Journal Square is under the West District. Here’s the department’s basic information:
JCPD West
Address: 576 Communipaw Ave., Jersey City, NJ 07304
Telephone: (201)547-5450
Fax: (201)547-5077

Meanwhile, there’s a complaint about a man harassing customers at 924 Bergen Avenue, asking them for drinks. Police was on the way when I heard it on my scanner.
———————————-
I hate to post something like this as it sounds so negative, but I feel obliged since some of the crimes go unreported. Consider this as my way of help to inform other residents, because according to JCPD “I can’t do anything about it.”
Have a safe Friday night!

this is horrible. I am definately very alert and I suggest my fellow residents do the same. I hope there is an increased police pressence in Jsq especially with all of the muggings and robberies.

Good advice indeed. Every attempted crime must be reported, if for no other reason than to keep the database accurate. JSQ, can you explain in more detail what reporting it to the police entails? How long does the “interview” process take, etc.

Nice to see you here WiredJC!
I really don’t know how long the “interview” process take, my educated guess is it depends on the incident. This one was the first time I called the cops re: crime , so I really do not have a legit comparison. (I think I am a regular caller of JCPA though, as I complain a lot re: drivers who illegally park in front of our driveway! :P )
When I reported this one, it took only about 5-8 minutes (I had to call 9-1-1 first because I have the wrong number in my address book  ). All the cop needed to hear was, the victim wasn’t me. Then she proceeded to tell me that she had to talk to the old man, who at that time, already decided to go home. To cut the long story short, reporting = fail, since I was not the victim of the incident.

[...] However, other crimes such as robbery, muggings, bomb scare, car break-ins, etc are still prevalent in our section. Unfortunately, It’s hard to track/document these as JCPD database is divided into four parts: north, south, east, west. Since JSQ is in the heart of JSQ, crime reports for our area are recorded in various parts. I am sure there were even unreported incidents. [...]
