Officially open - Feb. 2nd, 2009
After so many postponements, BALLY TOTAL FITNESS officially opened its gym to their members. Two weeks ago, the staff said they will open February 2nd this year, and Jersey City residents still doubted their words. However, BALLY didn’t fail this time.

Bally Total Fitness here in Journal Square - the one and only in Jersey City - will officially open its gym on February 2nd, 2009, according to the staff who I talked to when I went there.
I got a “gym tour” when I went inside this evening. The staff said today is their first day of opening, and they were offering pre-sale discount to those who want to become a member. They offer discounted enrollment fee ($49 instead of $99), which will not be available starting tomorrow (January 14, 2009).
You have two options if you want to become a member: contract and month-to-month. For contract, you have the sign a 3-year(!) deal. For monthly, you’ll have to pay $44.99 per, excluding the enrollment fee. You also have to pay the last month. So that’s $200 before you can use the gym.

A few residents that were anticipating a December opening have a valid reason to be upset: Jersey City’s one and only BALLY Total Fitness located here in Journal Square is still not open. They were informed last week that the opening date will be in 3 weeks. As you can see in the picture above, BALLY is now hiring, but the shutters are still down. The construction inside progresses slowly whenever I peek in during my JSQ “walk around.”
Hopefully this place will open before the year ends.

Inside, you’ll see men working. By the looks of it, BALLY will not open this week. When a worker came out, I asked him when is BALLY going to open. He said “probably a month” since more work needs to be done.

BALLY Total Fitness started the construction of its business site way back February this year. It even had a sign that said it will open Summer of 2008.
Well, summer has passed and it’s already fall, but the construction is still not finished, making the excited patrons disgruntled. Seems like BALLY will open in the winter.
A commenter on JCRegister called up BALLY and learned that it will open in November. If you want to verify, you can call them up yourself.

STILL NOT OPEN
Bally Fitness Corp should get involved and find out why it has taken over 5 months to open this club.
If it is really Jersey City Inspectors causing the delay, then we should get an official reason published to the Journal Square community. Why would an inspector find soo many things wrong (if they are really wrong) with a new facility?? Do they think that since they have power, they can act anytime they please at the expense of the community??
This Club will only help the JSQ area… Why the delay?
Someone should be embarrased; either Bally Fitness or the city ..

Hi Eddie … actually, the construction began February last year, with the initial opening date of Summer 2008. For so many unknown reasons, it got delayed.
I’m not sure what’s the deal, but the same can be said to T-Mobile on JFK. It took them more than 3 months to open.

I’m a Bally’s Gym member but my boyfriend wants to join also. He would like to get a membership on the still closed Bally’s located in Journal Square so we can go together since it’s so convenient for us. Since we live nearby… Even though, it’s still closed… Is there a way to join? Maybe there is a number to call in order to become a member before opens?

Called today, person on the phone said 3-4 weeks. I asked him if that was standard answer as I’ve gotten it before and he seemed dumbfounded by my question. I have an odd feeling they’re either not going to open, or the have the same dollar store construction company that the T-Mobile on JFK has.

Can anyone tell me what the gym is like? How is their strength training equipment? Do they have a lot of machines or just 2-3?
Any help is appreciated.

I went to Ballys in Journal Square last Wed. PM. It’s a very nice gym. The ladies locker room was huge and clean. All the lockers were new, as were the machines. No one had to wait to workout on a treadmill or ellipitial(spelling?) machine-and the place was pretty jammed. The group workout room is still waiting for equiptment. The staff was pleasant and helpful. No JC attitude. It’s not as elegant as Club H and no freebie soap or hair products. The group workout schedule is a work in progress. You might need to pay extra for pilates-it was unclear on the schedule. It has 3 floors. I believe the grand opening is next weekend.

The gym in JC isn’t bad. The only thing I DO NOT like is it is unsanitized. The gym needs to have antibacterial spray for the member to wipe down machines before and after using the machines. They should also mount 2-3 hand sanitizers on each floor. I guess because it’s new, things are still in progress. Other than that, I’m ok:!: :!:
