If you went out for a walk around Journal Square last night (6-7PM), you probably had noticed an unusual number of vehicles on Bergen Avenue and Sip Avenue. More police mobiles were visible and cops were patrolling around the new Culinary Arts Plaza Park. Newkirk Street corner Bergen Avenue in particular was blocked to traffic.
Reason? Mayor Jerramiah Healy had something important to say.
At the Culinary Arts Institute (161 Newkirk St), hundreds of people gathered to hear the incumbent mayor speak. Joined by other political figures including NJ Governor Jon Corzine, Mayor Healy formally announced his re-election campaign in front of his avid supporters.
“Delivering change you can see” is his tagline. Mayor Healy cited several proofs that Jersey City is indeed changing for the better: more cops were hired (about 300 more), crime was down, JC is greener (more parks), developments are supported; these are just a few things he mentioned last night. “And I am not done yet.” he said. And the crowd cheered.
“When I say that more change is coming, you don’t have to wonder if I can get it done. Just look around,” he said to the huge crowd, which frequently broke out in applause. (Source:NJ.com)
While this is very nice to hear, a curious person might ask: “Are these really true?”
Because all you have to do is open your eyes, and you will see that the crime stats went up last year, the streets need more cleaning, and the roads still give you a bumpy ride.
Here’s to hoping that the change is for the better.
