At a little over 5PM today, the rain started pouring as I was driving West of Sip Avenue for gas refueling. 10-15 minutes later on the way back, this was the scene at the intersection of West Side Avenue and Sip Avenue, right by Rite Aid Pharmacy in Marion Neighborhood.

Sewage system couldn’t handle the strong rain, and manholes were overflowing. I have to take other route to avoid this depressed area of Sip and West Side Avenue.

I wonder which other areas of Jersey City got flooded this afternoon.

On Tuers Avenue, a short power interruption was experienced, and it was restored after 5 to 10 minutes.

The reason?

I don’t know which other parts of Journal Square or Jersey City were affected, but when I called PSEG (1-800-436-7734), the automated machine told me that power will be restored at 10:33 AM today. Hopefully it’s true.

Jersey City receives funds to repave Newark Avenue and Sip Avenue. Last year (May 2008), Sip Avenue and other portions of Journal Square were ripped up, and got a facelift (new asphalt). This time, the other side of Sip Avenue (West of JSQ) will be improved. I hope they extend it to West Side Avenue because the drive there is just terrible, especially the portion of TWIN City just past the Fire Station.

Newark Avenue near Five Corners taken Oct. 2008

As for Newark Avenue, I don’t know why it is slated for another road construction because it was already repaved just last October.

This new funds however, will extend Newark repaving to Coles Street in Downtown, Jersey City.

…The project — which applies specifically to Sip Avenue between Kennedy Boulevard and Bergen Avenue and Newark Avenue between Tonnelle Avenue and Coles Street — will also include installation of handicapped curb ramps, replacement of catch basins, and installation of bicycle-safe grates…

The overnight storm wasn’t as bad as anticipated. Journal Square didn’t receive a foot of snow. Today, past 2PM, I decided to go out and take a walk around the neighborhood despite the windy weather.

Some portions of Academy Street are still unshoveled, which made it very hard to walk. On the other side, I saw a lady cleaning up the front of her house.

Bergen Avenue

Bergen Avenue was clear of snow. Good job snow plowers! :D

Local businesses on Bergen Avenue did a great job clearing up their front. Let’s see how it looks like inside the Post office…

Post Office

There’s a line, but as usual, only two windows were open at that time. The Parcel window on the right was open which had a line of its own.

Bergen Avenue Looking North

While businesses to the south of Bergen shovelled their front, BALLY’s seemed not to care about the inevitable ice forming on their sidewalk. (To their credit, they’re able to shovel the snow this evening)

Maintenance of Hudson County College were doing the Culinary Arts Plaza Park. It’s a huge spot, so it’s no surprise there were several of them.

Even the usually busy boulevard, south of Journal Square, was a little “timid” for a business district.

Some people didn’t shovel the snow last night and neglect to put salt on their front which resulted to icy walks.

Experience tells me that breaking the ice is tougher than shoveling the powdery snow. So good luck to all home owners cleaning up their fronts today.

Jersey Journal reported that there were 36 murders in Hudson County .. 27 of those occured in Jersey City, the highest count in 10 years.

The report listed down the names of the victim and their addresses, and I checked if there were incidents in Journal Square. There were none. Nada.

However, other crimes such as robbery, muggings, bomb scare, car break-ins, etc are still prevalent in our section. Unfortunately, It’s hard to track/document these as JCPD database is divided into four parts: north, south, east, west. Since JSQ is in the heart of JC, crime reports for our area are recorded in various parts. I am sure there were even unreported incidents.

Read the rest for the full list of names on the murders in Hudson County. Brief description is included.

24. Jose Tecson, 55, of Roosevelt Avenue, was stabbed to death during a Nov. 6 burglary of his home off Mallory Avenue. Tecson, who worked nights, was home during the daytime burglary and there were signs he was tied up and was trying to escape when killed. The burglar entered the apartment by removing the air-conditioner from an alley window. No arrests have been made.

25. Tyrone W. Counts, 43, was beaten with a baseball bat and stabbed to death on Dec. 11 in the apartment of Carmen Matos, 47, at Palisade Avenue and Waverly Street. Matos was arrested the next day after telling police about the body, and her 17-year-old son and the son’s 18-year-old homeless friend, Christopher Gonzalez, were also charged with murder. The case is pending presentation to the grand jury.

26. Henry Molesky, 41, of Woodlawn Avenue, was shot on Dec. 12 at Clinton Street near West Side Avenue and he died at the Jersey City Medical Center two days later. Timothy Williams, 26, of Jersey City, has been charged with the murder, which police say was precipitated by a dispute earlier the night of the shooting. The case is pending presentation to the grand jury.

27. Three-month-old Shariff Whitehead Jr. had multiple injuries when he died on Jan. 15, 2008 and his father, Shariff Whitehead Sr., 27, of New Heckman Drive, has been charged with aggravated manslaughter in the death, officials said. An autopsy determined the boy died of asphyxiation and had multiple rib injuries. Whitehead Sr. awaits trial.
