Hit-and-Run at JFK Blvd and Bond St

Weeks after the horrific accident at the boulevard and St. Paul’s Avenue, another speeding incident occurred at the same main road and Bond Street claiming the life of a 47-year old musician from Bayonne.

Jersey Journal reports that witnesses said that Gene “Bluejean” Hughes – a recording artist – was struck at Kennedy Boulevard and Bond Street by a black Honda Ridgeline pickup truck that was traveling north on Kennedy Boulevard at 11:47 p.m…

… (witnesses) saw the pickup, which contained a male driver and female passenger, stop momentarily where Hughes was lying in the street and then take off north of Kennedy and then eastbound on Sip Avenue… another witness told police the driver of the pickup blew through a red light at Kennedy Boulevard and Stuyvesant Avenue..

If you’ve been in that area the past several weeks, you probably have noticed that construction has been going on (will end in September), and portion of south-bound lane is closed. That is enough reason for motorists to take extra care when driving. I just don’t see the need for speeding, especially during night.

In the News: Robbery and Decomposed Body

Some Journal Square news this week (July 11-17, 2011): A robbery took place on Thursday July 14, 2011 on Pavonia Avenue. The thieves — both teenagers — were captured by a cop in plainclothes while traveling on Sip Avenue. (I hope the report indicated a more precise location; is it west of JFK or east side?) The police sensed that something was not right when he saw the teenagers acting suspiciously. When he questioned them, a toy gun was recovered, as well as the stolen items, which were returned to the owner. Good job by the police!

Offbeat news: This evening, Jersey Journal reports that a “decomposing body of a man was found tonight inside a Van Reipen Avenue…” Authorities say the body has been there for some time, and no foul play was involved.

Pedestrian Killed in Alleged Drag Racing

Two brothers are involved in an alleged drag racing incident that killed a pedestrian last night (July 12, 2011) at 10:45PM, according to NJ.com.

Fire Director Armando Roman said fire officials were called to School 31 at St. Pauls Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard at 10:45 p.m. and found a two-car crash and the pedestrian pinned against the fence…the driver in the right lane lost control of his car, crossed into the southbound lanes and struck two pedestrians…

I use this road almost everyday, and I see absolutely no reason for drag racing to happen in this place. Sure, there are less vehicles at night, but that’s not an excuse. If you want to race, go to a designated place to do that.

Condolences to the family of the victim, and speedy recovery to those who got hurt.

Heavy Traffic in Journal Square due to Suspicious Package

Just got home (6:06PM) from work after an hour drive — 30 minutes just on Summit Avenue alone! The traffic is all the way to the heights area (somewhere between Carlton and Troy Avenue). I sensed something was going on when cars were moving VERY slowly as all intersections are jammed.

Van Reipen and Pavonia Avenues are blocked off, so I couldn’t turn right towards the boulevard. I decided to stay on Summit going South, and it turned out to be a sound decision to make.

I immediately checked the news, and NJ.com reports that there is a suspicious package in Journal Square area: “…The swell of activity is on the southbound side of Kennedy Boulevard at the overpass that is opposite the taxi stand. That is directly above train tracks. All the sidewalks are closed in the area as well…”

All I can say right now is I’m glad to be home! (I hope the package isn’t a bomb)

Mugging: Tuers Avenue Near Vroom Street

A group of about 6 men assaulted a man on Tuers Avenue near Vroom Street around 730PM tonight – February 23, 2010. According to my neighbor, he was sitting inside his parked van (near Academy Street) when he saw the group walking south of Tuers. They appeared to be “joking around” when he viewed them from his mirror, so he didn’t bother reporting it.

I hope the victim wasn’t seriously injured by this act of cowardice.

JSQ Crime: Kidnapping and Robbery

A.) Bergen Av and Academy St. B.) Sip Av and Enos Place

This incident happened last Monday evening (May 17), at around 9PM. A woman was allegedly abducted by two men at the corner of Bergen Avenue and Academy Street (south of Journal Square), and held her against her will. She was dragged into a car before the men drove around.

Bergen Av and Academy Street is a well-lit area: MLK, Jr School (PS-11) and Bergen Square are both located on that corner; C-Town is just across the street, so there must be some cameras installed around.

Police responded at around 1:15 Tuesday at the corner of Sip Av and Enos Place on a report of a kidnapping and found the 21-year-old Forrest Avenue woman “crying and visibly shaken,” reports said.

What happened in between is unspecified in the report.

…The victim told police the men drove around until finally pulling over at Enos and Sip, where they got out and entered a building, reports said. She grabbed her cell phone from the front seat, got out of the car and ran, reports said, adding that the men also stole $40 from her…

JSQ Crime: 2 Attempted Robberies and Attacks in a Week

Make that two attempted robberies and attacks in two consecutive nights: Wednesday – in the back of Loew’s Theatre just across PATH station; Thursday -at the intersection of Corbin Avenue and Pavonia Avenue, north-west of Journal Square.

Back of Loew’s Theatre: “…A man broke the driver’s side window of a car with his fist and then punched the driver in the face during an attempted robbery…” meanwhile, the accomplice (a woman) blocked his car’s path, reports said.

The night after, this is what happened west of Journal Square:

Corbin and Pavonia Avenues: “…A Jersey City woman was punched in the face when two men tried to rob her of her pocketbook at Corbin and Pavonia avenues…” according to the reports.

2009: 2 Murders in JSQ (28 in Jersey City)

In 2008, there was zero murder here in Journal Square. Last year (2009), there were two – one in Marion Neighborhood, and the other just a couple of blocks away.

The Jersey Journal created a map that plots all murders/homicides that occurred in Hudson County in 2009. Jersey City’s homicide/murder rate went up from 27 to 28, which include the killing of Police Officer Marc DiNardo last summer.

Below is the details of the murder charges in Journal Square, extracted from the map:

1054 West Side Ave
Dareus Burgess, 28, of Jersey City, is shot to death June 8 in a playground at 1054 West Side Ave. Anthony Rose, 25, of Jersey City, has been charged in the murder. JSQJC Link

Manuel Reyes Sr., 48, of Jersey City, is stabbed to death in his apartment at 111 Van Wagenen Ave. in Jersey City on May 6. Esteban Gonzalez, of Union City, is charged with the murder. JSQJC Link

Shattered Glasses on Tuers Avenue

It was a beautiful day in Jersey City: sunny and not too cold, blue skies but partly cloudy. So I went to Duane Reader at Journal Square PATH Station and bought some stuff. On the way home, I decided to walk around Vroom Street. I noticed shattered glasses on Tuers Avenue (see pic above) and Vroom Street (no photo). If you are a new resident here looking for parking spot, would you be encouraged to park here after seeing evidences of car break in?

Three boys got in trouble with cops yesterday on unrelated incidents near Dickinson High School (Newark Avenue and Palisade Avenue, Jersey City | Map).

The following are the charges:

alleged robbery – 17-year old boy – Newark and Palisade Avenues
alleged drug possession – 17-year old – McPherson Place and Newark Avenue
alleged assault and drug possession – another boy – Baldwin and Pavonia Avenues

3 Dickinson High School students arrested after school, Jersey City cops say

Jersey City police patrolling outside Dickinson High School after school this afternoon because of a threatened gang fight arrested three students on unrelated charges and confiscated six bags of suspected marijuana and 51 vials of suspected cocaine, officials said….

…On Thursday two gangs, the Marion Boys and the Duncan Boys, had squared off, prompting yesterday’s extra police presence, officials said.
