In about two weeks time, the school will start. But PCTech – a medical training school on Bergen Avenue, Jersey City – remains closed due to unpaid rent, and is facing eviction.

Last May, I wondered if this school is a rip off because it made the news frontpage when some students complained about the former recruiter who allegedly stole money from them.

This morning’s news implies that PC Tech is facing financial difficulties as it hasn’t paid rent for several months now. However, school’s founder and director Mana “Soma” Somalingam still continued the school’s operation until it finally closed yesterday (Monday).

From the news: “Where are we going to go next?” asked Carmen James, 45, who was scheduled to graduate in March. “I don’t want to waste another five months of my life.”

While the school continued to receive money from students, several school staff “had complained that they were not getting paid.”

More from the news: Student Desha Smalls, 24, said she is convinced the administration knew something was wrong, but that nobody told the students.

—–

If this is how things are going to be, all I can say is good riddance, PC Tech! I’d be surprised if students receive refunds of their tuition and fees.

PC Tech is relatively new here in Journal Square, compared to other local businesses. The school has been here probably for the past couple of years. The name suggests it’s a technology school but it is also a medical training ground for those who want to explore the medical fields. The school is very easy to spot: between C-Town Supermarket and Provident Bank, right across PS-11. (Map: 895 Bergen Avenue, Jersey City 07306)

Today, the school made the frontpage issue of The Jersey Journal.

Apparently, at least 30 students have complained about a former recruiter (Ralph Georges) for the school for stealing money (approx. $5K) from them. They were promised accreditation certificates and other services which never materialized. Here’s a snippet of the news: “Jeffia Warner, 23, said she learned her certificate was phony during a job interview with a doctor earlier this year. To add insult to injury, Brischia (Del: the other person who complained), who didn’t want her last name used, said her name was spelled incorrectly on her worthless certificate.”

The students demanded their money back but PC Tech didn’t lift a finger until this issue has been escalated to the local news. After months of fighting for their money, students who dealt with Georges received reimbursements from PC Tech; Warner and Brischia also received their refunds. Officials at PC Tech claim that the ex-recruiter is an independent contractor who is not allowed to collect money from students, which left them confused: “I don’t understand how somebody can work for this company and they (the school) have to tell people not to work with him,” Warner said.

Do you think this is a rip off?

Speaking of ripoffs, Tom Howard of JournalSquared has written a post about hot to get ripped off in Journal Square. He talked about some stores (ie. Sunflower Deli, UPS) that sell over-priced/over-taxed items. Pretty lengthy, but it’s definitely a nice read.

GIFTS FOR IRAQ KIDS

Friday, January 09, 2009

By TOM SHORTELL

JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Six eighth-graders at School 11 in Jersey City yesterday presented a U.S. Army soldier returning to Iraq with four boxes filled with toys and treats for Iraqi children – the crowning achievement of their “Kids to Kids” project.

“I want to thank you guys for the work you’ve done so far,” said Army Specialist Jon Burns, 30. “It seems like (the Iraqi children) live for that. They’re always waiting by the side of the road for a soccer ball or a candy bar.”

The gifts, including books, balls, magnetic toys, coloring books, cookies and candies, will be taken on patrols heading out from Camp Bucca in southeast Iraq, Burns said. The recipients will range from the children of poor farmers and sheep herders to kids in urban areas, he said.

“We try to get it to the little girls especially,” Burns said. “Otherwise the boys will knock them right over.”

For the students, helping other children makes sense.

“Since kids in the U.S. have so much and they have so little over there, it seemed like the right thing to do,” said Kimberly Tu, 13.

Students got the idea after Korean War veterans spoke to sixth-, seventh-and eighth-graders, said Assistant Principal Diane Pistilli.

The veterans mentioned how soldiers often give children who approach them candy bars. The stories reminded Pistilli and several students of a Jersey Journal article about Hudson County residents presenting Burns with 300 soccer balls to distribute to children, Pistilli said.

“I told them, ‘I want you as boys and girls to have a little meeting to brainstorm ideas and come back to me after that,’” she said.

And faculty also chipped in, Pistilli said, donating $300 for gifts at a fund-raiser.
