Did you see this yesterday? Several Jersey City officials were at the corner of Academy Street and Baldwin Avenue (South East of Journal Square) to honor the late community activitist Frank Roman. The intersection was renamed after him.

I wonder if Armando Roman – the one who took the inset photo above – is also related to him…

Jersey City corner renamed for Frank Roman, longtime community activist
by Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal
Monday March 30, 2009, 2:46 PM

Dozens of persons gathered yesterday at the corner of Academy Street and Baldwin Avenue in Jersey City to rename the intersection “Frank Roman Way” in honor of the lifelong Jersey City resident and community organizer who lived nearby.

Forty-seven years old when he passed away 10 years ago, Roman was a former two-term president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Local 2306, which represents around 600 Hudson County welfare employees and served as president of the steering committee of Hogar CREA, a Jersey City drug rehabilitation center, officials said.

He was also a vice president of the Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage Parade for four years.
His brother, Armando Roman, is the city’s fire director.

Several elected officials attended the dedication ceremony, including Mayor Jerramiah Healy, Hudson County Sheriff Juan Perez, Hudson County Freeholder Eliu Rivera, Council President Mariano Vega, Councilman Peter Brennan, and Deputy Mayor Kabili Tayari.

Armando Roman remembered his brother, who died March 24, 1999, as “a defender of his people.”

Frank Roman had six brothers and five sisters and left behind his fiancee, Linda Mangan. Roman graduated from St. Peter’s College after attending public schools including Ferris High School.

Water will be shut off Saturday in portion of Journal Square
by Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal
Wednesday November 05, 2008, 2:17 PM

United Water will be turning off the spigots to a portion of the Journal Square section of Jersey City Saturday in the first of four shutdowns over the coming month, United Water announced today.

Residents may lose pressure or have no water as the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority shuts off a 20-inch water main at 5 a.m. The main will remain off for the whole day, officials say. Saturday’s closure will affect residents on Newkirk Street between Summit Avenue and Baldwin Avenue, and on Summit Avenue between Academy Street and Sip Avenue.

The project to replace six valves over the coming months will require further shutdowns on future Saturdays, including at Summit Avenue and Newkirk Street (Nov. 15), at Summit Avenue and Academy Street (Nov. 22) and at Baldwin Avenue and Newkirk Street (Dec. 6).

United Water officials say that the water may be discolored, but is safe. They recommend running it until it clears for drinking, cooking or washing clothes. They recommend filling containers and bath tubs Friday to use the following day.
