A Journal Square resident commented that a grocery shop might replace the defunct restaurant.

The building on the photo above has been undergoing major renovations (construction and facade remodeling) the past couple of months. And last week, the blue tarp has been removed — revealing the finished front of the structure. Front door is already an automatic door and a handicap ramp was added on the side (not seen on the pic).

I haven’t looked inside the place – but it looks like the construction inside will take a couple more weeks to finish.

Anyway, good luck to the owner of this upcoming local business.

This building at 65 Sip Avenue has been abandoned for ages, in my estimate, at the same time as the demolished hotel on the square. Based on the name on Jones Street entrance, the site was the occupied by Hudson Physical Therapy before it was abandoned.

Last week, I noticed this structure (65-75 Sip Avenue) is already fenced. Construction on the way?

See more photos inside this post …

I took the following photos last Fall, September of 2008…

The building without the fence. This is an eyesore in Journal Square, along with another building across the street (not in the picture).

The issuance date of construction building notice says “May 2007″, for interioir demolition.

Junks accumulate in the front of 75 Sip Avenue. Who’s in-charge of cleaning the garbage if the structure is abandoned?

Chunk falls from 2-story Journal Square building
Tuesday, October 14, 2008

A chunk of decorative facade fell from a building that is home to a string of stores at Journal Square in Jersey City Saturday afternoon, police reports said.

Police were flagged down at 2:26 p.m. Saturday by a passerby who told them a piece of the front of the two-story commercial building at 2877 Kennedy Blvd. had slammed onto the sidewalk outside Cohen’s Fashion Optical, just south of the Loew’s Jersey Theater, reports said.

The chunk was roughly 36 inches long and 5 inches high, judging from the space in the facade yesterday.

No one was hurt and a scaffolding canopy has been erected around the building to protect pedestrians in case more masonry falls, city officials said.

The building’s owner, Thomas O’Kane, said it appeared to be an “isolated incident,” but the scaffolding was put up as a precaution. City building officials said they are waiting for a report from a structural engineer to determine what caused the facade to crumble.

[Original Post: Oct. 14, 2008] Renovation at Cohens Fashion Optical

The building where Cohens Fashion Optical and other local businesses such Sneaker Square and Boulevard Drinks are situated at (corner of Kennedy Boulevard and Journal Square) is being renovated/reconstructed. This afternoon, it caused a slow-moving traffic along JFK Boulevard, as only one South-bound lane was open to traffic.

The photo above was taken when I was just Pavonia Avenue.

In front of Journal Square Pub

Normally, it would only take less than a minute to drive through this boulevard, but I caught the red light due to heavy volume of cars.

I was north-bound, in front of the JSQ fountain

After an hour, I saw less car but the south-bound traffic was still slow moving when I was on my way to a meeting.

On the way home. Scaffolding already installed.

On my way home, scaffolding was already installed in the front of the building. The traffic was of course relatively light.

But by the looks of it, the construction/renovation won’t be finished until next week.
