Now Open: Apna Bazaar Cash and Carry in Jersey City

APNA BAZAAR Cash and Carry finally opened yesterday (May 6, 2010) after what seems an eternity of building construction. This Apna Bazaar is different from the one on Newark Avenue, just a couple of blocks north of Indian Square.

Now we know what type of business will replace the defunct Tiffin Box. Although the construction isn’t finished yet, the building on John F. Kennedy Blvd (between Cottage Street and Newark Avenue) now has a sign that says “Coming Soon: Apna Bazar” — a grocery and a place where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables.

Grocery Store to Replace Tiffin Box on JFK?

Last June, I posted that Tiffin Box on the boulevard (between Cottage Street and Newark Avenue, Jersey City) shut down after less than a year of operation.

A Journal Square resident commented that a grocery shop might replace the defunct restaurant.

The building on the photo above has been undergoing major renovations (construction and facade remodeling) the past couple of months. And last week, the blue tarp has been removed — revealing the finished front of the structure. Front door is already an automatic door and a handicap ramp was added on the side (not seen on the pic).

I haven’t looked inside the place – but it looks like the construction inside will take a couple more weeks to finish.

Anyway, good luck to the owner of this upcoming local business.

This building on John F. Kennedy Boulevard (corner Cottage Street) couple of blocks north of Journal Square PATH Station is undergoing construction, finally.

The said structure seemed abandoned, even before American Hero next door moved across the street. (Tiffin Box had replaced American Hero, but it shut down after less than a year in business).

As you can see from the BEFORE photo above, a company called UTI was once here in Journal Square.

Now that the construction is on-going, I wonder what kind of business will occupy this site.

And for how long.

December 19, 2008 Snow Pictures: Journal Square

What’s something good to do on a snow storm? Take some pictures! On my way home, I took a few shots of Journal Square to document the first significant snow storm of winter.

Cottage Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard

Around 4PM during a stop at Cottage and JFK Boulevard. At this time, snow fall turned into rain, causing the accumulation to melt.

C-Town

South-bound looking right is C-Town Supermarket where I usually buy my groceries. (they’re having a Christmas Sale starting today).

This time, I took pictures after buying stuff from the C-Town. The store supervisor was putting salt on the ground. Across the street, a guy was shoveling snow.

The view from Academy Street and Tuers Avenue at 435 PM. See how dark the skies were? Signs of the impending rain.

As of writing, the rain temporarily stopped, causing the snow on the ground to turn into ice. According to the weather forecast, there will be a light freezing rain tonight and the temperature will drop.

Hopefully, the weather gets better tomorrow despite the forecast of flurries.

Academy Street and Bergen Avenue

Rainy day today in JSQ, and expect more showers until late this afternoon. I went out to buy some food and thought it would be nice to capture the gloomy day using my camera phone.

Hopefully, the sun will come out tomorrow so I can do my Sunday Photos of our area.

Paving in Journal Square

Cottage Street

Did you notice the paving of two streets here in Journal Square? The one is on Cottage Street (see pic above), and the other is on Newark Avenue.

The manholes are raised and the road is ripped. Both streets have NO PARKING Notice (7am – 5pm Oct. 1 – 3, 2008). However, the paving on Newark is much longer as it extends up to the India Square past Kennedy Boulevard. I am not sure though if the Newark paving goes past Summit Avenue/Five Corners.
