Any Journal Square residents interested in Crafts Fair? You’re in luck, as the largest, hippest, most craft-tastic event in Jersey City called “Not Yo Mama’s Crafts Fair” will be taking place this coming Saturday, April 17, 2010. Leah Siegel-Picus – one of the organizers – said in her email that “due to the overwhelming success of last year’s event, we (Sophie Penkrat, Megan Gulick, and myself) have decided to go LARGER and with MORE ATTRACTIONS!”

George Washington Tribute in Front of Jersey City’s Apple Tree House

Yesterday morning (February 15, 2010), Jersey City honored George Washington in front of the Historic Apple Tree House on Academy Street.

This structure — one of the oldest buildings in Jersey City — was where George Washington and General Marquis de Lafayette met to discuss war strategies. “I for one choose to believe it,” Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy said of the legend. News.

About 30 people who are members of two groups (George Washington Commemorative Society and The Spirit of Liberty) joined the sidewalk festivities.

In the news, JC Councilwoman Nidia Lopez said she hopes the interior construction will be finished before next year’s observance.

Will they open this historic site to public once the construction is completed?

Tomorrow, this play about Filipinos in America – written and directed by Tino Aquino Capili – will be staged at Five Corners Library. It has been staged three times before, and tomorrow might be the last. The play has received an excellent review from an award-winning Filipino writer Dr. Jorshinelle Taleon-Sonza.

This event is also recommended for Non-Filipinos who want to understand Filipino culture and history, or who want to gain insights of who Filipinos truly are.

I hope to see fellow Filipinos tomorrow and Jersey City residents who are interested in this type of event.

Candlelight Vigil at Journal Square Plaza

In case you are wondering why there were people with lighted candle around the kiosk at Journal Square Plaza, it is because they were holding a candlelight vigil.

The said event was held to express the need for a “public option” to be part of the health care proposals being debated in Washington, according to the Jersey Journal.

Jersey City Blood Drive last Friday @ 5 Corners

Eventhough the weather was bad last Friday, the blood drive at Five Corners Library on Newark Avenue, Jersey City still pushed through. This is my first time donating blood after 7 long years.

The guy who took my info told me that there were only a few respondents for their event when I asked him. I was only the third person who came, and it was already 1PM that time.

Below is the blood donor who works at the municipal court. Same as I am, he just walked in after he saw the sign at the corner of Newark and Summit Avenue:

And this is me and my slanted smile. :P It took me several minutes to fill up the plastic bag with my blood.

Jersey City Job Fair at Five Corners Library

Here’s a bit of a good news after a bad week in Jersey City (shooting, corruption arrest, weather).

If you are considering a change of “work” atmosphere, you might want to check out the job fair at Five Corners Library on August 11, 2009 from 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM.

This is a project of Jersey City Communities that Care Coalition (JCCTCC), so if you want to know more about the job fair, please contact them or the library.

Job fair is not limited to Five Corners Branch. JCCTCC will also be holding more job fairs across Jersey City for the next couple of months.

Journal Square Pics: St. Paul Community Cookout

The Community Cookout at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Hoboken Avenue (off of Five Corners) last Saturday (July 11) was a complete success. Well over 100 neighbors from the Five Corners area of Jersey City came to enjoy hamburgers and hotdogs, ice cream, and one another’s company, according to its website.

Journal Square Events: Cookout & Volunteer @ St. Paul Church

Here’s a couple of events at St. Paul Lutheran Church (440 Hoboken Avenue, Jersey City) near Five Corners.

This Saturday, they’ll be having a community cookout/ice cream social for Journal Square/Five Corners community.

Next week, they will be needing volunteers for their Feed The Hungry program.

Community Cookout/Ice Cream Social

We’re inviting the entire Five Corners/Journal Square neighborhood to join us on Saturday, July 11, 11 am to 1:30 pm, for a cookout and ice cream social. We’ll serve hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings, beverages, and homemade ice cream–all for free! Our youth group will run children’s games, and tours of the church building will be available. This is a great opportunity to meet your neighbors in our little corner (Five Corners!) of Jersey City. Come one, come all–come rain or come shine!

Volunteer to Feed The Hungry

The Sharing Place, the hunger ministry of St. Paul Lutheran Church, provides nutritious food to over 600 families every month. You can help!

Unload the food truck on Wed., July 15, or Thurs. July 23, at approximately 8:30 am. Please contact Sharing Place director Santos Murillo for details.

Make and distribute bags of groceries on Saturday July 18 or July 25, 7:30 am till noon (or later if the need is great)

Pics: Book Fair @ Capital One Journal Square

I checked out the Book Fair at Capital One Bank Journal Square branch yesterday and was surprised by the number of people who came. Kids were accompanied by their parents/guardian, and a father reading a book to her little girl.

The lady in the conference room (I assume she’s the Capital One Bank Spokewoman Kirsten Micco, sorry I forgot to ask her name) said that the table was overflowing with books the first hour of the event. Books were donated by the bank’s staff from across New Jersey.

This is the first time Capital One Bank held an event like this. When asked if they will do the book fair again, she said they’ll see how the event goes. She said a lot of Jersey City residents came, mostly kids who love children’s books.

From the looks of it, we’ll probably see a repeat.
