In this post you’ll find the list of some of the government agencies holiday closing/business hours for the new year. For those who are “lazy to read” (LTR), here’s a short summary: Most offices are open on New Year’s eve with limited services, and all of them are closed on New Year’s Day.

Short Details: Post office will be open Thursday, but closed on Friday. DMV/MVC – closed on New Year, SSA open except Federal Holiday, therefore, they are also closed on New Year.

December 31 (New Year’s Eve) – open (early collection of mails, though). You have to drop your mails/letters in the blue collection mailboxes before 12 noon.

Jersey City Christmas Decors: No finalist from Journal Square

Christmas Decors and Lights at Chestnut and Elizabeth St.

Have you been around Journal Square to see the beautiful Christmas lights and decors of the houses? I took these pictures about two weeks ago, before the pre-winter snow storm hit the East Coast.

NJ.com posted the finalists of Jersey City’s Best Christmas Decorated Homes contest 2009 hosted by Pat O’Melia. Unfortunately, no homeowner from Journal Square made the final list.

Below are some photos from Stuyvesant Avenue, Romaine Avenue, Garrison Avenue, Chestnut Avenue and Elizabeth Street. The decors are much beautiful in real life, I must say.

Happy Thanksgiving to all residents of Journal Square area of Jersey City! I hope you enjoy your holiday with your family members and friends. Be reminded that tomorrow, parking rules and regulations will be suspended in observance of the holiday.

Here’s one along the boulevard…

- St. John the Baptist Church and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel parishes are having a free Thanksgiving Dinner Thursday for those in need from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in St. John the Baptist’s school auditorium, 3044 Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City (enter parking lot side of school on Huron Avenue). For more information, contact Jimmy King at (201) 963-1383.

If you want to volunteer, St. Paul Lutheran Church on Hoboken Avenue (Five Corners) are looking for servers to spend time with the needy …

With the generous support of United Way of Hudson County, the Sharing Place at St. Paul Lutheran Church will be serving a feast for our needy neighbors on Thanksgiving Day. Turkey and all the trimmings will be served in several shifts from 10 am to 2 pm on November 26. Helping to serve this dinner would be a good way to express thanks for what you have! Contact the Sharing Place director to volunteer.

Regular Sharing Place distribution of groceries will take place as usual on the last two Saturdays of the month, November 21 and 28.

July 4 Closings in Journal Square Jersey City

Two days from now we are going to celebrate July 4 Independence Day in Jersey City. However, facilities will start closing as early as tomorrow and will resume normal hours of operation on Monday, July 6, 2009

After our festive Easter worship service at 10 am on April 12, the children (and young-at-heart) of St. Paul Lutheran Church will have an Easter egg hunt. Happy New Year to all Journal Square residents! May the coming new year be filled with prosperity and blessings!

Here’s weather update and commuting news for the end of the year …

Jersey City weather (and the entire Hudson County) is expected to have light snow with combination of high winds. It will be colder late in the afternoon when more snow is anticipated.

Regarding commute, extra buses and trains are added for the holiday. This is good news if you are going to Times Square to celebrate New Year tonight.

…Travelers this holiday evening and early tomorrow will find extra buses, extra trains and additional trips being added to normal weekly schedules to accommodate them throughout New Jersey and New York City….

…The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey also will add trains to its regularly weekly schedule today on the PATH service….

MVC Schedule for Christmas

DMV-MVC Journal Square Branch has their Christmas schedule posted on the front door. They are open today, but will be closed tomorrow, December 25, 2008 in observance of Christmas holiday. They will re-open on December 26, 2008.

Beautiful Christmas Lights and Decors

Bright lights

Have you tried driving or walking around Journal Square at night? If yes, you probably have seen houses adorned with bright Christmas lights and ornaments, such as these two on Stuyvesant Avenue near the corner of Romaine Avenue.

I have seen several other buildings/houses with nice, head-turning Christmas decors; unfortunately, most of them are on the hidden streets — off the main roads.

The pictures were taken before 8 PM this evening. With Christmas only 10 days (technically, 11) away, the owners of the house were still adding lights to the existing configurations.

As I was admiring the scene, the owner told me that they have a big Santa doll, and pointed up to their front door.
