The Journal Square Redevelopment – “Are 80 story buildings coming?”
St. Joseph Nursing Home – “Planned Greenspace Area”
The New City Hall Annex - “More tax spending, when will it stop?”

Memorial Day at Harsimus Cemetery

If you’re looking for a Memorial Day event tomorrow, try the Observance Ceremony at Harsimus Cemetery on Newark Avenue, east of Journal Square going Downtown Jersey City.

The Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery will honor the fallen heroes at 12PM. There will be Memorial Day Ceremony & Musical Performances and the event will be attended by various city/state officials, and civic groups. Refreshments will be served during this free event.

George Washington Tribute in Front of Jersey City’s Apple Tree House

Yesterday morning (February 15, 2010), Jersey City honored George Washington in front of the Historic Apple Tree House on Academy Street.

This structure — one of the oldest buildings in Jersey City — was where George Washington and General Marquis de Lafayette met to discuss war strategies. “I for one choose to believe it,” Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy said of the legend. News.

About 30 people who are members of two groups (George Washington Commemorative Society and The Spirit of Liberty) joined the sidewalk festivities.

In the news, JC Councilwoman Nidia Lopez said she hopes the interior construction will be finished before next year’s observance.

Will they open this historic site to public once the construction is completed?

From JJ Editorial: “Journal Square needs more than it gets”

The Jersey Journal (JJ) asks today why the redevelopment of Journal Square is taking so long. The editorial points the finger to the Special Improvement District (SID) – the agency responsible for the beautification of our district, including the promotion of local businesses.

Snippet of the editorial:

… It is time to re-evaluate this agency, which is funded by imposing special tax assessments on commercial property owners to produce what initial taxes failed to provide — clean streets, security and successful promotion of Journal Square.

There is little evidence that the SID does much to help shop owners or attract a bounty of new retail stores that are a step up from fast-food eateries. It is time to go beyond providing new facades for old stores…

JJ then proceeds to compare JSQ SID to other SID’s of New Jersey, including our neighbor Mcginley Square. “…The McGinley Square SID seems more successful. It at least provides a newsletter and holds events — and volunteers run the agency’s show. It is time for some accountability in Journal Square.”

2009: 2 Murders in JSQ (28 in Jersey City)

In 2008, there was zero murder here in Journal Square. Last year (2009), there were two – one in Marion Neighborhood, and the other just a couple of blocks away.

The Jersey Journal created a map that plots all murders/homicides that occurred in Hudson County in 2009. Jersey City’s homicide/murder rate went up from 27 to 28, which include the killing of Police Officer Marc DiNardo last summer.

Below is the details of the murder charges in Journal Square, extracted from the map:

1054 West Side Ave
Dareus Burgess, 28, of Jersey City, is shot to death June 8 in a playground at 1054 West Side Ave. Anthony Rose, 25, of Jersey City, has been charged in the murder. JSQJC Link

111 Van Wagenen Ave
Manuel Reyes Sr., 48, of Jersey City, is stabbed to death in his apartment at 111 Van Wagenen Ave. in Jersey City on May 6. Esteban Gonzalez, of Union City, is charged with the murder. JSQJC Link

Jersey City Event: Navratri Festival in India Square

The Indian community on Newark Avenue will be holding their Navratri Festival this week and the following week. The streets will be blocked off and a stage will be installed. Expect cultural dances and Indian food until wee hours.

Jersey City Schools Officially Start

Schools in Jersey City such as Martin Luther King, Jr. School (Bergen Ave) officially start today (September 10, 2009). Good luck students, and make this year a good one!

As for me, it means morning traffic on Academy Street, Bergen Avenue, and Summit Avenue — and afternoon parking trouble when guardians and parents pick up their kids from school. Don’t block the driveways please.

Candlelight Vigil at Journal Square Plaza

In case you are wondering why there were people with lighted candle around the kiosk at Journal Square Plaza, it is because they were holding a candlelight vigil.

The said event was held to express the need for a “public option” to be part of the health care proposals being debated in Washington, according to the Jersey Journal.

Boil Water Alert in Jersey City

Due to the water main break that occurred last night, United Water customers must boil water until further notice.

…Customers in Jersey City are advised to boil their water at a rolling boil for one minute for the following uses: drinking, cooking, baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets or other consumption….

United Water Customers In Jersey City Must Boil Water

Water Pressure Returned To Normal In Most Of City
Harrington Park, NJ, Sep 01, 2009, 8 a.m.

United Water officials advise that the boil water advisory continues for customers throughout Jersey City. The boil waster advisory was issued earlier today following loss of pressure resulting from a break on 24-inch water transmission main.

Water pressure has returned to normal levels for most of the city. However, customers on the west side of the city will have lower pressure until the water main repair is completed. This includes the area starting on Broadway between Rte 440 and Tonnelle Avenue going to JFK Blvd and continuing south to Danforth Avenue. Customers in this area should conserve water while the repairs on in progress.

United Water crews are working to make the repair as quickly as possible.

Customers in Jersey City are advised to boil their water at a rolling boil for one minute for the following uses: drinking, cooking, baking, making ice cubes, taking medication, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing baby formula, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets or other consumption.

The boil water advisory is in place until further notice.

Jersey City Beautification: Flower Boxes on Newark Ave

If you’ve walked along Newark Avenue, you probably have seen this plant/flower boxes installed at the cross-streets. The photos above (taken last month, Jul 29) are flower boxes from India Square, between JFK and Tonnelle Avenue.

I am not sure how far East the boxes are installed, but I have seen them past John F. Kennedy Boulevard and Five Corners.

Is there any other part of Journal Square that has these flowerpots?

By the way, one report says plants disappear from the boxes on West Side Avenue in Jersey City.
