Two accidents: Same time, different places

Some weird accidents happened just about ten minutes ago on Bergen Avenue. Police, firemen, and Emergency units responded to two incidents at around 10:37 this morning.

A middle-aged woman of Indian descent fell off while crossing Bergen Avenue at the corner of Academy Street in front of C-Town Supermarket. I asked one bystander who witnessed the incident and he said the lady just dropped on the street.

He also added that another incident occurred “at the same time, also a woman.” and he pointed at the direction of Newkirk Street near Bally’s Gym where paramedics were already attending the lady.

I am unsure if it is related to the heatwave. The sun is up, but it is a little breezy, better than yesterday. As of writing, the cops blocked off the north-bound lane of Bergen Avenue.

Wall being cleaned up on Vroom Street

Yesterday (April 27, 2011) while I was driving around, I saw a group of people removing graffiti from the walls. Not really sure which agency was responsible, but I first spotted them cleaning up the building walls at the corner of Newkirk Street and Bergen Avenue using high-pressure water hose. On the way home, I saw them removing graffiti from the side walls of Lovely Laundry at the corner of Vroom Street and Bergen. Jersey City is filled with graffiti, but I guess their priority are those visible from the main roads.

Last month, Bally Total Fitness Gym on Bergen Avenue closed due to fire. The adjacent business – Ashley Stewart Clothing Store for Womens – was affected. Both of them still remain shut down more than a month after the incident.

Newkirk Street (westbound lane – the strip from Jones St. to Bergen Av) was blocked off for about two weeks due to repairs done to the building. The photo above was taken a week after the fire occurred. Newkirk Street is now open to traffic.

However, it still remains unknown when Bally or Ashley Stewart will reopen for business.

Bergen Avenue last night

So I got the chance to drive around at 11PM last night and noticed that it was probably the garbage pickup schedule on Bergen Avenue based on the amount of trash on the road. (Sorry for the crappy pic, that’s the best I can do :P )

Papers were scattered on the ground and worse, a good amount were flying around as the strong winds blew through the night. Some plastic bags were knocked down to the ground as well, as shown below.

Fortunately, all these trash were gone in the morning. Photo below was taken at around 8:15 AM.

The morning after -- trash disappeared like magic.

All I can say is, the comparison is literally night and day! (pun intended)

Snowman on Newkirk Street

The pre-winter storm yesterday (December 19th, 2009) dumped at least 15 inches of snow in Journal Square, probably 18 inches in some areas of Jersey City, and it clearly outmatched the first snow storm of the season on December 4th.

I was able to drive around and take some pictures of the neighborhood to document the aftermath of the snow storm, 2 days before the official winter….

On the other hand, these men at the corner of Vroom Street and Van Reypen preferred to use the shovel.

Meanwhile, these ladies were having a tough time clearing the front of their apartment.

There’s no garage or driveway facing the traffic lights so I think they’re pretty much useless. Can we take them down and put them somewhere in Jersey City where they can be of use?

Bergen Avenue and Newkirk Street

This was the scene in Journal Square this morning. It was snowing (with rain), but it wasn’t sticking to the ground. It was definitely a lot different than yesterday, when we had a record-breaking warm weather at 67 degrees Fahrenheit.

I assume this guy was going to work, but he didn’t bother bringing an umbrella with him. I heard from the weather forecast that it’s going to rain this afternoon, so if you are reading this, I hope you are properly geared. The weather is ugly today.
