PATH Train to WTC Suspended for Pres. Obama

US President Barack Obama will participate tomorrow – May 5, 2011 – in a wreath-laying ceremony at Ground Zero. As a result, train services to World Trade Center (WTC) will be afffected.

According to the PATH Advisory:

PATH ADVISORY: Tomorrow May 5 Midday, PATH service will be suspended into the WTC for approximately one hour due to Presidential visit. Please watch for updates.

PATH Train Troubles Today (May 19, 2010 – Service Resumes)

I woke up this morning and saw my email bombarded with PATH Alerts that started last night. Apparently, there are some problems in PATH trains. All lines were suspended except the Hoboken line to 33rd St NY. News said there was signal problem (fire in the tracks), but it was already contained. NJ Transit Rail and NJ Light Rail will be cross-honoring Path Train service. That’s probably why we hear choppers early this morning.

The latest as of 7AM: Path Train system wide is resuming service with 15 minute delays, according to PATH website.

Suspicious Package at Stanley Theater

Several streets in Journal Square area of Jersey City were closed this morning due to police activity responding to a bomb scare/threat at Stanley Theater (Pavonia Avenue and JFK Boulevard).

Snippet of the news:

…It is believed that police detonated the package at about 10:45 a.m. One witness said the package was a briefcase. Police responded to the briefcase at about 9:30 a.m.

[Original Post 2:45 PM] Glimpse of Newark Avenue’s India Square before the rain this afternoon. Not the usual busy street today. Journal Square Live Music was still on when I drove by, but I don’t know what’s going to happen in the Farmers’ Market as the weather looks to worsen by the hour.

Police Activity at Journal Square PATH? Relax, There’s No Crime

If you are wondering why there are so many cops at Journal Square PATH station, you probably didn’t know that today is the funeral mass for the fallen Jersey City Detective Marc DiNardo. He was shot in the face during the shootout last week and died in the hospital days later.

His wake was attended by at least a thousand people yesterday at McLaughlin Funeral, and as I am typing this, his casket is being transferred to St. Aedan Church on Bergen Avenue for funeral mass.

I heard the procession is long, and the traffic is heavy. Streets are closed and no-parking zones are implemented.

Mourners will continue to Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington for the burial.

PATH Security Screening Starts Today

If you are receiving PATH Alerts, you probably know that starting today, PATH together with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will be conducting security screening to detect and prevent threats such as bombs.

This will go on for one month.

So for those using the PATH going to NYC, good luck covering your privates!

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration, in cooperation with PATH, a subsidiary of The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, will test passive millimeter wave passenger screening technology that detects threats, including explosive devices.

Passive millimeter wave technology does not emit radiation of any kind. It is safe and poses no risk to passengers.

All passengers entering a PATH station where screening is taking place are subject to the security screening. Passengers who do not wish to be subject to such screening, must exit at that station.

There were several fire trucks and police cars around Journal Square PATH Station when I drove by this afternoon (no Pics due to rain). And according to PATH Alerts, a smoke condition caused suspension of all train service at JSQ station, Jersey City.

Below are the two PATH Alerts concerning today’s incident:

All PATH service is temporarily suspended, due to a smoke condition at Journal Square.

Alert at 1:58PM.

Concerning PATH full service suspension: NJT is cross-honoring bus, rail, light-rail.

Alert at 2:25PM

According to news, an electrical fire occurred which shuts down the entire system. Fire is now under control but officials are “in the process of finding a generator to restore power to the affected control panel and get service back up.”

A jumper from the Summit Avenue bridge just outside the Journal Square PATH train station in Jersey City died this morning, officials have confirmed. .

Port Authority confirmed that a person leaped on to the PATH train tracks from the Summit Avenue bridge at 11:45 a.m. this morning.

The person was pinned under a westbound PATH train, said Port Authority spokesman Ron Marisco.

Train service between Journal Square and 34th Street Penn Station and Grove Street and Newark has been suspended, Marisco said.

The Jersey Journal’s Charles Hack reports that commuters at the Journal Square PATH Station are being turned away from the trains because of the ongoing investigation.

Commuters are being told to take a bus to the Grove Street PATH station and get the train from there.

PATH workers are also telling commuters service is expected to resume by about 1:30 p.m.

Power Tripping Guard?

I received an email from Ed yesterday asking me if taking pictures of some buildings in Journal Square is prohibited:

From Ed’s unedited email:

hi, is there any prohibited area around journal square that you can not take pictures, the reason i ask is that one night at 10:30 pm while sitting inside my car at dunkin donut parking lot(summit) and playing with my camera(DSLR), a path security happen walking by and saw my camera, he ask me(with attitute) if im trying to take picture of the journal sqaure building.

is the dunkin donut parking lot part of path train. what i believe it a public place…thanks

I told him that basically, he can take pictures of property as long as he is on public places (I believe DD parking lot falls into this category). Behind Dunkin Donut (located on Summit Avenue, corner Magnolia Avenue) is the PATH private parking garage. I’ve been there just last September, and even took a few pictures, with a guard looking by. I also don’t believe that DD parking lot is not owned by the PATH, so my guess is the guard who approached Ed was simply “power-tripping“.

(Inside the PATH Train though is another story. I believe they have rules now that you can not take pictures while you are inside the train)

Furthermore, you can’t take pictures indoor if it is specified by a sign — a “No taking of Picture” is suffice. An example of this sign can be found at the Burger King in Route 440, Jersey City.

Oh, when I received the email yesterday, I decided to stop by the place and took a few snaps using a point-and-shoot cam, hoping a guard would approach me. Unfortunately, nobody came. I would be glad to pass some basic info about photography rights/laws to him. :mrgreen:
