Taj Mahal - Newark Avenue Entrance (taken May 9, 2010)

Taj Mahal Restaurant on Newark Avenue (just off of Five Corners) finally opens in Journal Square after more than 2 years of construction. What took them so long, I don’t know. The Indian Cuisine has two entrances: one on Newark Avenue (main) and another on Summit Avenue.

Jersey City Food: Kultural Kuisines on the Boulevard

Kultural Kuisines opened late November of 2009. So why exactly am I posting this restaurant? Well, it is because this place has been the home of two previous failed restaurants (can you guess without clicking the link?) in a span of 1 year. Makes me wonder: For how long will this business stay open?

Jersey City Food: Kabab House in Journal Square

Kabab House is the new restaurant that replaced Salt & Pepper Grill just a few weeks back. The owner said Kabab House”s menu is still the same as S & P’s, but will change it in due time.

Village Voice: Boulevard Drinks Hotdogs – One of the Best

NY Village Voice Blog compiled a list of top ten hotdogs in NY and NJ, and Journal Square’s Boulevard Drinks made the list.

“Fork in the Road has picked Our Top Ten franks, but this time we haven’t limited ourselves to the five boroughs and a sliver of New Jersey. Rather, we’ve ranged over two states–at least those parts you can reach with a two- or three-hour drive.…”

Check out the first link in this post to see what other places in NY/NJ offer the best hotdogs. Maybe you’re familiar with some.

Journal Square Restaurant: Jimmy’s Pizza

Just over a year ago, Big Cheese and Deli and Pizza opened on Bergen Avenue. Yesterday, I noticed that the front sign has been changed to “Jimmy’s Pizza” with a logo of a chicken that says “Rotisserie Chicken” underneath.

A quick peek through the shutters, I saw a sign that says “New owner“.

When will this local business open? Or should I ask: How long do you think this restaurant will last?

Journal Square Biz: Tiffin Box Jersey City, Gone?

Tiffin Box on the Boulevard

So, does anyone know what happened to Tiffin Box on John F. Kennedy Boulevard? The sign says it is under construction, but I don’t know for sure if another restaurant/fast food will occupy this site.

Tiffin Box Jersey City started just last summer, replacing American Hero, which moved just across the street (next to Salt and Pepper Grill). I’ve heard mixed reviews about Tiffin Box, but it’s a shame it didn’t even last a year if they’re permanently closed.

One of the popular fast foods/restaurants here in Jersey City and New York because of its hotdog. It is right next to Loews Theater, across PATH Station.

3 Guys From Italy – Pizza and Restaurant

3 Guys From Italy had a small place at the demolished building on the square (see first photo above), by the stairs of the Journal Square PATH Station. It took them a while before they reopened at their new place on the boulevard.

This new spot is much better. It’s cleaner, and bigger and it has tables inside. 3 Guys From Italy also offers free delivery.

Taj Mahal: When Will It Open?

One of the Journal Square local businesses I’ve been watching is Taj Mahal. Why? Because the place has been under construction for 8 months already.

This afternoon, I noticed that the front of the restaurant on Summit Avenue has been painted in white. Compare the pics with JCRegister Taj Mahal post. I was in the area last Sunday, and I noticed the lights inside were on. Perhaps the restaurant is really opening soon?

Casa Victoria on Newark Avenue

Casa Victoria on Newark Avenue opened about a month ago. But I felt I had to post this because I noticed some of their uninformed patrons keep going to their old place just a few doors away (2A restaurant, left picture) which has been closed for renovation. 2A’s front door is overloaded with signs and notices that really don’t help.

So for Journal Square residents – especially Filipinos – who frequent 2A Restaurant, make sure to take note of this.
