Dream Come True: Sip Ave, Jersey City – Repaved

First of all, I’m glad to be back from 3-week hiatus. I’m officially married and I needed a few weeks to take care of everything. Despite that, I still took some photos while my ex-girlfriend (now wife) was with me.

Today, I’d like to point out that finally, driving on Sip Avenue doesn’t feel like we are sailing on an angry sea.

Jersey City received repaving funds last March, and this month, portion of Sip Avenue (between JFK boulevard and West Side Avenue) has been repaved: no more potholes and sinkholes, and lanes are newly-painted.

Jersey City Sidewalks: Handicap Curb Ramps

New handicap curb ramps can be seen on Sip Avenue (corners of Garrison, Romaine, and Van Wagenen Avenues). Is this part of the repaving funds that Jersey City received last March?

This was started early this week, and you probably have noticed orange drums and cones on each corner. These constructions were the same ones on Vroom Street few weeks back (not posted here).

I believe handicap curb cuts are required by law.

Anyway, I’m still waiting for the repaving of Sip Avenue, particularly on the west of Bergen Avenue — from HCCC Culinary Arts Plaza to West Side Avenue. I think I will be singing halleluiah when those potholes and sinkholes are finally gone.

Journal Square Road Repair: Vroom Street

South of Journal Square, Vroom Street from Van Reypen (West) to Summit Avenue (East) has been ripped up and manholes are raised — road paving will follow soon.

“No Parking” signs have been posted, but I see cars parked on right side of the street.

I hope Jersey City starts repaving Sip Avenue soon.

Journal Square: Water Main Break Again on Newark Avenue?

Huge pile up on John F. Kennedy Boulevard during afternoon rush hour

At around 440PM, I got stuck in traffic south bound of JFK Boulevard. The traffic stretched from Heights area of Jersey City to south of the boulevard, and I wondered if there’s something going on on the square.

As the traffic moved slowly, I saw orange cones blocking off the corner of Newark Avenue and John F. Kennedy Boulevard. United Water truck was visible in the picture below. Was there another water main break?

Hopefully, the contractors finished everything by tonight.

Road Repairs on Newark Avenue

Newark Avenue road repairs

You probably have noticed this street repairs on Newark Avenue today. It was reported the other day, and this construction required shutting off water. Thus, Five Corners Library was forced to close for a day.

The traffic was slow-moving. West-bound of Newark Avenue used the other half of the east-bound lane, as some traffic officers direct traffic.

This has no connection to the brown water issue in Journal Square and around Jersey City.

Jersey City Repairs Force Five Corners Library 1-Day Closure

Going to the Five Corners Branch library (north-east of Journal Square) this Saturday? You probably need to cancel it or go there tomorrow as it will be closed due to street repairs.

As a matter of fact, Eastbound of Newark Avenue (from Tonelle Avenue) was blocked off this afternoon. Just don’t know if this is related to the road construction this Saturday.

The Five Corners Branch Library, at 678 Newark Ave. in Jersey City, will be closed Saturday because of street repairs that require turning off the water.

The library expects to reopen Monday with its normal hours, noon to 8 p.m.

Journal Square Repaving Funds: Sip and Newark Avenues

Sip Avenue taken last year (May '08)

Jersey City receives funds to repave Newark Avenue and Sip Avenue. Last year (May 2008), Sip Avenue and other portions of Journal Square were ripped up, and got a facelift (new asphalt). This time, the other side of Sip Avenue (West of JSQ) will be improved. I hope they extend it to West Side Avenue because the drive there is just terrible, especially the portion of TWIN City just past the Fire Station.

As for Newark Avenue, I don’t know why it is slated for another road construction because it was already repaved just last October.

This new funds however, will extend Newark repaving to Coles Street in Downtown, Jersey City.

…The project — which applies specifically to Sip Avenue between Kennedy Boulevard and Bergen Avenue and Newark Avenue between Tonnelle Avenue and Coles Street — will also include installation of handicapped curb ramps, replacement of catch basins, and installation of bicycle-safe grates…

Rainy Tuesday in JSQ

Five Corners - Summit Avenue

It was rainy this morning in Journal Square; just look at the picture above – it was unbelievably dark at 8AM. This was at Five Corners (Summit Avenue), I was heading north of Jersey City, avoiding the boulevard.

Why? Find out by reading the rest. :P (Photos included)

The traffic yesterday was heavy. Academy was jammed with cars and huge vehicles that inconsiderately blocked intersections. (see photo below)

I was stuck in the queue of vehicles on Academy, and as soon as I got out of there, I decided to take a snap.

One glance at my rear-view mirror, I noticed that the intersection of Bergen and Academy was barely passable.

This morning, I noticed that Academy traffic was still heavy. I wanted to be smart today, so I avoided my normal route and I took the Summit. Good move. One thing I noticed: there appeared to be a road work between Newkirk Street and Sip Avenue of Summit.

Sorry, no picture… the light was green. :P

Sidewalk Construction on the Boulevard

Remember when the Jersey Journal published a “road work” at John F. Kennedy Boulevard and Rt. 1 & 9 ramp? Here’s a snap of what’s going on (taken yesterday morning before 9am).

John F. Kennedy Blvd and Rt. 139

The ramp to 1 & 9 was open yesterday, but the traffic in Journal Square (even on Bergen and Academy Street!) was heavier than usual, reason why I took Summit Avenue this morning.

It seems to me that the road work is not directly related to 1 & 9 construction, but to the sidewalk of this abandoned building/lot instead.

If you have a more credible info about this “construction”, please feel free to post. ;)

Road Construction on Bergen Avenue

Bergen Avenue corner Newkirk Street

This was the sight this morning on Bergen Avenue in Journal Square, Jersey City during the rush hour. Minor delay, as the normal two lanes on both directions became one.

Hopefully, they finish it tonight. Otherwise, it’s going to be chaos tomorrow morning when the school opens.

Take Summit Avenue or JFK if you’re heading north tomorrow morning, (or any alternate route in JSQ) just to be sure. ;)
