This incident happened last Monday evening (May 17), at around 9PM. A woman was allegedly abducted by two men at the corner of Bergen Avenue and Academy Street (south of Journal Square), and held her against her will. She was dragged into a car before the men drove around.

Bergen Av and Academy Street is a well-lit area: MLK, Jr School (PS-11) and Bergen Square are both located on that corner; C-Town is just across the street, so there must be some cameras installed around.

Police responded at around 1:15 Tuesday at the corner of Sip Av and Enos Place on a report of a kidnapping and found the 21-year-old Forrest Avenue woman “crying and visibly shaken,” reports said.

What happened in between is unspecified in the report.

…The victim told police the men drove around until finally pulling over at Enos and Sip, where they got out and entered a building, reports said. She grabbed her cell phone from the front seat, got out of the car and ran, reports said, adding that the men also stole $40 from her…

Originally, the Journal Square Redevelopment Plan — dubbed as the “Vision” — covered a wider territory of our district. It was scaled down, though, after hearing what the residents have to say.

The new plan features the development of the two tall towers (City Center) and only includes the square itself — bordered by the following streets: John F. Kennedy Boulevard, Bergen Avenue, Sip Avenue, Summit Avenue.

(Note: Although the demolition of dilapidated hotel was celebrated during the Renaissance Ceremony last April, nothing seems to be going on in the area even though it was said that the development will start later that year.)

According to Jersey Journal, Jersey City planning officials will hold a meeting with residents and community groups before moving ahead with a Journal Square redevelopment plan. So Expect more changes and revisions to the plan before any move is done.

How is the snow situation in your area? Did you get out of your house, or just sleep it off?

I managed to walk around (Bergen Av from Academy to Sip then back), and it wasn’t easy: the strong gust of wind blew the snow right to my face, not to mention the deep accumulations on the streets.

There were only a few people walking on the streets, and the first group I saw was the young teenagers building snowmen in front of Martin Luther King, Jr. School (PS-11).

They had been there for 15 minutes when I talked to them. They were finishing up after I took their picture. On my way back, they were walking north of Bergen Avenue and they said they destroyed the snowmen when I asked if they finished. “We were just having fun.” said the young gentleman when I asked them why.

Most of the local businesses were closed. Jersey City’s one and only 7-11 is open, as well as a few delis and lottery stores were open though.

This group of gentlemen were enjoying their hot coffee which is perfect for this cold weather.

Very quiet here on Sip Avenue.

Crossing John F. Kennedy Boulevard? Don’t forget to look left and right before doing so! According to Hudson News, “Kennedy Boulevard and Avenue C are Hudson County’s most dangerous roads for pedestrians ….”

…The Tri-State Transportation Campaign released an analysis of pedestrian deaths from 2006 to 2008.

There were 22 pedestrian casualties during that time period. Four of those casualties, all in 2007, happened on Kennedy Boulevard, with two in both Jersey City and Union City and one in Bayonne….

Here in Journal Square area, I remember one woman who was struck by a truck last September at the corner of JFK Blvd and Newark Avenue. News said that she’s been moved to ICU of JC Medical Center the following day.

Do you feel nervous walking by the boulevard? To me, the intersection of Sip Avenue-JFK Boulevard is hard to cross: the road is wider, the drivers always try to run the red light, and vehicles are piling up especially during the afternoon rush hour!

Sip Pizza is just one of the local businesses that opened in the past month. It is located across various Delis near DMV-MVC Jersey City. If you’re coming from from the PATH station, just walk east of Sip Avenue on to Summit Av.

The fast food features .99c pizza, which seems to be an attractive price based on the number of people I see there everytime I pass/drive by the place. As for the pizza itself, I haven’t tried it yet.

Slurpee anyone? The spot vacated by Washinton Mutual (WaMu) last February will now become 7-Eleven. I saw some construction going on inside a couple of days ago (Christmas Eve). 7-11 is just one of the few businesses that opened/will open this month (will post some soon). Makes me wonder, how many 7-Eleven’s do we have here in Jersey City?

The parking sign on this strip of Sip Avenue (between Bergen and JFK) right across Hudson County Community College Culinary Arts Plaza Park clearly indicates that nobody should park between 6AM and 9AM & 4PM and 6PM Monday thru Friday. About 4 cars received violations.

The funny thing is, a taxi driver was backing up attempting to park on a vacant metered spot while the police were writing tickets. Get a clue! (he wasn’t slapped with a ticket though, the police made him leave)

New handicap curb ramps can be seen on Sip Avenue (corners of Garrison, Romaine, and Van Wagenen Avenues). Is this part of the repaving funds that Jersey City received last March?

This was started early this week, and you probably have noticed orange drums and cones on each corner. These constructions were the same ones on Vroom Street few weeks back (not posted here).

I believe handicap curb cuts are required by law.

Anyway, I’m still waiting for the repaving of Sip Avenue, particularly on the west of Bergen Avenue — from HCCC Culinary Arts Plaza to West Side Avenue. I think I will be singing halleluiah when those potholes and sinkholes are finally gone.
