How is the snow situation in your area? Did you get out of your house, or just sleep it off?

I managed to walk around (Bergen Av from Academy to Sip then back), and it wasn’t easy: the strong gust of wind blew the snow right to my face, not to mention the deep accumulations on the streets.

There were only a few people walking on the streets, and the first group I saw was the young teenagers building snowmen in front of Martin Luther King, Jr. School (PS-11).

They had been there for 15 minutes when I talked to them. They were finishing up after I took their picture. On my way back, they were walking north of Bergen Avenue and they said they destroyed the snowmen when I asked if they finished. “We were just having fun.” said the young gentleman when I asked them why.

Most of the local businesses were closed. Jersey City’s one and only 7-11 is open, as well as a few delis and lottery stores were open though.

This group of gentlemen were enjoying their hot coffee which is perfect for this cold weather.

Very quiet here on Sip Avenue.

Shattered Glasses on Tuers Avenue

It was a beautiful day in Jersey City: sunny and not too cold, blue skies but partly cloudy. So I went to Duane Reader at Journal Square PATH Station and bought some stuff. On the way home, I decided to walk around Vroom Street. I noticed shattered glasses on Tuers Avenue (see pic above) and Vroom Street (no photo). If you are a new resident here looking for parking spot, would you be encouraged to park here after seeing evidences of car break in?

Teens Clean Up Journal Square, Jersey City

I saw a group of teens (around 10-15 teens, some not in the picture) cleaning up streets and curb this morning on Tuers Avenue. This is not the first time I saw people cleaning up sidewalks of Journal Square this summer. A couple of days ago, I saw another group (older) on Newkirk Street and yesterday on Pavonia Avenue between JFK and Summit.

Jersey City definitely could use this type of service.*thumbs-up*

Jersey City Power Outage: Portions of Journal Square Area

There’s a power outage in some portions of Journal Square today. On Tuers Avenue, a short power interruption was experienced, and it was restored after 5 to 10 minutes.

The reason?

DMV/MVC Building at 438 Summit Avenue corner Sip Avenue lost power.The state building was evacuated at 830AM this morning and people were standing outside as officials are trying to find out the cause of power failure.

I don’t know which other parts of Journal Square or Jersey City were affected, but when I called PSEG (1-800-436-7734), the automated machine told me that power will be restored at 10:33 AM today. Hopefully it’s true.

Jersey City Crime: Woman Robbed on Tuers-Vroom

This happened last Friday afternoon (5:15PM) either on the block where I live or further South towards the church (see map above)… A Bayonne woman was walking on Tuers Avenue near Vroom Street (South of Journal Square PATH) when two men robbed and assaulted her. The cowards made off with $2,500 worth of cash and jewelry after they bullied and hit the 44-year old lady in the face, knocking off her glasses.

There have been numerous crimes on this spot in the past (car break-in and mugging most commonly); some documented here, and some not even reported to the police. Expect the numbers to climb during the warm weather.

Brown Water in Journal Square and Jersey City

Is your tap water brown and dirty? Several Jersey City residents from downtown complained about water discoloration yesterday, and apparently it is still an issue today.

Our water here on Tuers Avenue was brown today, and it returned to normal at around 4:30 PM this afternoon (an hour ago as of writing).

What’s your water situation in your area?

- Both Jersey City and Hoboken are experiencing brown or discolored water. According to United Water this is due to value repairs. They say “this is temporary and the water is safe to drink. ( um, I’ll pass on that ) Anyway, FYI

- i had the brown frown water last night around 11. i live on grove street, a little freaked out to even shower this morning.

- Brown water in Journal Square too. They must be doing lots of work in many places or did a water main break somewhere?

- Brown water in McGinley Square starting around 4.

JSQ Is Not a Public Urinal

I was driving around when I spotted a man on Tuers Avenue surveying a small alley. I stopped and parked on the street, waiting for his “move”. Then he stood against the wall for a good minute to relieve himself. After that, he took a bottle of liquor from his plastic bag and took a long drink.

This looks like a common thing here in Journal Square. Try walking to the PATH station, and tell me how the smell is particularly around the relics of the demolished hotel. Disgusting.

Well, on a positive note, at least they don’t do this on to people.

December 19, 2008 Snow Pictures: Journal Square

What’s something good to do on a snow storm? Take some pictures! On my way home, I took a few shots of Journal Square to document the first significant snow storm of winter.

Cottage Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard

Around 4PM during a stop at Cottage and JFK Boulevard. At this time, snow fall turned into rain, causing the accumulation to melt.

South-bound looking right is C-Town Supermarket where I usually buy my groceries. (they’re having a Christmas Sale starting today).

This time, I took pictures after buying stuff from the C-Town. The store supervisor was putting salt on the ground. Across the street, a guy was shoveling snow.

The view from Academy Street and Tuers Avenue at 435 PM. See how dark the skies were? Signs of the impending rain.

As of writing, the rain temporarily stopped, causing the snow on the ground to turn into ice. According to the weather forecast, there will be a light freezing rain tonight and the temperature will drop.

Hopefully, the weather gets better tomorrow despite the forecast of flurries.

False Alarm on Tuers Avenue

Firemen - Ladder 6 (L6)

If you live near Tuers Avenue (parallel Bergen and Summit), you probably heard the loud firetrucks around 730PM. My scanner was off, but I heard them loud and clear because they stopped near where I live.

I went out and saw firemen talking to some people in front of the house on Tuers between Academy and Newkirk, right at the back of PS 11 (Martin Luther King, Jr School). When I noticed that firetrucks were about to leave the premises, I asked a fireman if there was indeed a fire (I was concerned). He shook his head and said it was just a false alarm.

I took a photo but it doesn’t look good. Well, time to buy a new camera! I want to take night pictures of Journal Square and this camera phone is definitely not good. ;)

Facing South (Provident Bank Building, Vroom St.)

The skies are gloomy in Journal Square, which means going (or driving) around is no fun. It was raining early this morning, but it downgraded to drizzle as of 9AM. Reason why I was able to walk “Spree” (not my dog) along Tuers Avenue (between Vroom Street and Academy Street)

Hopefully, weather will be good tomorrow. It will be nice to greet December with a sunny weather. Have a nice day!
