Dream Come True: Sip Ave, Jersey City – Repaved

First of all, I’m glad to be back from 3-week hiatus. I’m officially married and I needed a few weeks to take care of everything. Despite that, I still took some photos while my ex-girlfriend (now wife) was with me.

Today, I’d like to point out that finally, driving on Sip Avenue doesn’t feel like we are sailing on an angry sea.

Jersey City received repaving funds last March, and this month, portion of Sip Avenue (between JFK boulevard and West Side Avenue) has been repaved: no more potholes and sinkholes, and lanes are newly-painted.

Journal Square Flood: Marion Neighborhood, Jersey City

At a little over 5PM today, the rain started pouring as I was driving West of Sip Avenue for gas refueling. 10-15 minutes later on the way back, this was the scene at the intersection of West Side Avenue and Sip Avenue, right by Rite Aid Pharmacy in Marion Neighborhood.

Sewage system couldn’t handle the strong rain, and manholes were overflowing. I have to take other route to avoid this depressed area of Sip and West Side Avenue.

I wonder which other areas of Jersey City got flooded this afternoon.

Jersey City Crime: Fatal Shooting in Journal Square

Another Jersey City Crime: A man was shot dead yesterday afternoon (June 8, 2009) at a basketball court on West Side Avenue between Broadway Street and Pavonia Avenue — north west of Journal Square PATH Station. Investigators said that the victim may have been involved in a dispute a day before this incident.

Police said the suspect is still at large. Read the rest for the news…

… Darius Burgess, 28, of Corbin Avenue, was shot at least once in the back near basketball courts located east of West Side Avenue near Pavonia Avenue, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.

The shooting was reported just after 2 p.m. and DeFazio said the victim was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 2:15 p.m…

I remember this basketball court because I used to play here with my friends few years ago. There’s a public swimming pool next to it, which opens every Summer.

JSQ Man Involved in JC Robbery

Wilfredo Rivera – a 20-year old resident of Journal Square (Sip Avenue and Romaine Avenue) was involved in Jersey City robbery that took place last night. He and his accomplice (Angel Bonilla, 19 of Kearney & West Side Avenues) reportedly took the victim’s North Face coat, cash, and keys before walking away.

Looks like North Face is in demand.

Robbery suspects dragged man into Jersey City alley at knifepoint: cops

Two Jersey City men were arrested on robbery charges moments after dragging a man into an alley at knifepoint and stealing his coat late Monday night, officials said today.

Angel Bonilla, 19, of Kearney and West Side avenues, and Wilfredo Rivera, 20, of Sip and Romaine avenues, were arrested on Clendenny Avenue at about 11:45 p.m. and charged with robbery, reports said.

The 25-year-old victim told police he was walking at Clendenny and West Side with a friend when a man pulled a knife on him and a second man grabbed him from behind and pulled him into an alley, reports said.

They took his NorthFace jacket, $72 in cash, and his house keys before walking away, reports said.

But the victim’s friend, who moved away when the robbers approached, called police and gave them descriptions, reports said.

A responding officer spotted Bonilla and Rivera a few doors away and brought them to the scene of the crime, where the victim identified them as his attackers, reports said.

Stabbing in Marion Neighborhood

In Marion neighborhood, west of Journal Square, a man was attacked with a knife but was able to fight his attacker who ran away when the victim got hold of the knife. Both of them suffered stab wounds and were brought to the hospital where the attacker was arrested.

The victim said he has had run-ins with Aponte (the attacker) before, because they have children by the same woman, reports said.

Sounds like a love triangle to me. Valentine-inspired crime? ;)

A Jersey City man who was attacked with a knife in the Marion section managed to take the weapon away, but both he and his attacker suffered stab wounds, officials said.

Ivan Aponte, 43, of Corbin Avenue, was arrested at the Jersey City Medical Center and charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses after the 5 p.m. stabbing at Pavonia and West Side avenues on Monday, officials said.

The victim told police he was walking home from a store when Aponte said “Yo, come here, I am gonna (blank) you up,” reports said. He said he has had run-ins with Aponte before, because they have children by the same woman, reports said.

The man said Aponte put a knife to his chin and cut him before they began struggling over the weapon, reports said, adding that Aponte ran when the victim got hold of the knife. Aponte went to the Medical Center for a stab wound to his forearm and he was arrested, reports said.

The victim handed the knife to responding officers and refused medical attention at first, reports said. At the police station, he complained of pain and an officer rolled up his shirt and found two stab wounds, reports said, adding that an ambulance took him to the Medical Center, too.
